Posted on Feb 13th

Hey, my Stage 32 Screen Talent!Who is looking forward to the Oscars this year? I won't lie, I haven't really been watching for a long, LONG time, but I'm curious to see who is honored and in what way.Have y'all been keeping up with The Hollywood Reporter's Roundtable series? They have an off-shoot called "Off Script" which is so enjoyable! Loved diving into the Actresses Roundtable with so many Oscar contenders:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KA-r9NEI_TsWhat were YOUR big takeaways? Who were you looking forward to hearing from? SHARE in the comments below! For me, I really loved hearing that Emma Stone carved out 3 weeks for rehearsals for actors and it wasn't for blocking or anything to do with the logistics of the filming portion but rather to generate energy and chemistry. How profound!

The Right / Wrong Way To Use Social Media For Actors

The Right / Wrong Way To Use Social Media For Actors

Posted on Feb 12th

You know that social media offers excellent tools to market yourself, but are you using each platform properly? As an actor, you want to constantly strive to create an image of yourself as an interesting and relatable person. So often, though, through the misuse of social media, the blending of personal and professional comes through and it becomes difficult to showcase ourself in the appropriate light. This isn't a rebuke on sharing parts of your life that are interesting and unrelated to acting; relating to your followers is an important part of being social. However, being consistent and molding your image is critical to gain a consistent and dedicated following. In the entertainment industry, image and perception are (almost) everything. You should strive to show your professionalism, talent, skill set, and appreciation for working daily to make yourself a better person and talent.Aspects of who you are and how you work to become better at your craft is very important to your social media profiles. Posting that you are at your workshop, getting new headshots, going to an audition, listening to a podcast about how to give an energetic performance every time, working on a new accent, etc., are all fantastic examples of what you could be telling your followers to boost your credibility. This also highlights that you are serious about your work as an actor.Focusing your time and energy is key to your online engagement. Don't spread yourself too thin by using more than three social media accounts. You should be using social media to show followers and fans what you're doing career-wise; it should not be the activity itself.Don't spend more than 15-20 minutes per day on each platform and spend it crafting what you are saying rather than mindlessly roaming around wasting time.Spend time talking to and responding to your friends/fans to show that you hear them. Did you know that Mr. Rogers reportedly responded to every single one of his fan letters? That's the commitment and respect he felt his audience deserved.#actor #socialmedia #lifestyle

Red Flags, Green Flags 1,2,3 ---> Actor Employment Agreement

Red Flags, Green Flags 1,2,3 ---> Actor Employment Agreement

Posted on Feb 11th

Green flags for actor employment agreements indicate favorable terms and conditions that benefit the actor and promote a positive working relationship with the production company. On the other hand, red flags signal potential issues or concerns that actors should be cautious about. Here are some examples of green and red flags for actor employment agreements:Green Flags: Fair Compensation is important! The agreement offers competitive compensation that reflects the actor's experience, role, and the budget of the production.    Clear Role Description!  The agreement clearly outlines the actor's role, including the character they will portray, their responsibilities, and any specific requirements or expectations.    Favorable Working Conditions! The agreement includes provisions for reasonable working hours, breaks, and accommodations, ensuring the actor's health, safety, and well-being on set.    Protection of Rights! The agreement includes clauses that protect the actor's rights, such as provisions for proper crediting, use of likeness, and protection against unauthorized exploitation of their image or performance.    Flexibility for Auditions and Other Work! The agreement allows the actor to audition for other roles and pursue additional work, provided it does not conflict with their obligations to the production.    Red Flags:Unfair Compensation it can be obvious. The agreement offers inadequate or below-market compensation that does not reflect the actor's experience, role, or the budget of the production.    Ambiguous Role Description! The agreement lacks clarity or specificity regarding the actor's role, responsibilities, or character, leaving room for misunderstandings or disputes.    Unreasonable Working Conditions! The agreement fails to provide adequate protections for the actor's health, safety, or well-being on set, such as long hours, unsafe conditions, or lack of breaks.    Exploitative Rights! Watch out! The agreement includes clauses that overly restrict or exploit the actor's rights, such as granting excessive control over their likeness or performance without proper compensation or consent.    Exclusivity or Non-Compete Clauses! The agreement includes clauses that restrict the actor's ability to audition for other roles or pursue additional work, limiting their professional opportunities and creative freedom.    Lack of Payment or Delayed Payment! The agreement fails to provide clear terms or deadlines for payment, or the production company has a history of late or non-payment to actors.    You must carefully review actor employment agreements and identifying potential green and red flags, actors can protect their interests, ensure fair treatment, and make informed decisions about their participation in film and television productions. Now, a good lawyer can do that for you. It also does not hurt do your own education. This information is good to learn.

An Affordable Housing Solution for A Hollywood Actors

An Affordable Housing Solution for A Hollywood Actors

Posted on Feb 7th

Let me introduce you to my friend Dan Logwood. We go way back to 1999 when we crossed paths as extras on the set of Madonna's "The Next Best Thing". It was a thrilling experience, spending the day playing with kids, enjoying amusement park rides, and indulging in a sumptuous catered lunch. Fast forward to two weeks ago, Dan and I embarked on an extraordinary journey by signing up for NASA's Artemis mission. While we're not crew members, NASA is launching our names aboard the Astrobotic Griffin Lander, set to embark on a three-month survey of Mons Mouton in the moon's southern pole. This mission aims to pave the way for the next generation of astronauts. Our names are etched into history, awaiting discovery by extraterrestrial beings in the distant future. While Dan currently resides in Indiana, he's gearing up for an exciting move back to Los Angeles this August. Taking a savvy approach, he's purchased an RV and secured a spot in LA County for just $300 a month, complete with a water hookup, a move that will significantly slash his living expenses. Considering the soaring costs of apartments in LA, ranging from $1,700 to $4,000 per month, this is a smart choice. Moreover, Dan plans to dive into the entertainment industry by joining a background actors' booking service to sustain himself while he pursues representation. With his sights set on obtaining his SAG union eligibility, fueled by his prior experience, including earning a SAG voucher for his role in "What Planet Are You From?" back in 2000, we're optimistic about his prospects. I'm immensely proud to share with you a short film titled "The Devil Strikes Twice", written and directed by Dan two years ago. In it, he takes on the role of the prince of darkness himself. It's inspiring to see Dan finally chase after his dreams, a decision he deliberately delayed until his son graduated high school. Now that Dane is a college graduate, he's encouraging his dad to embrace the West Coast lifestyle wholeheartedly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81fnKd2laek

Actor’s Closet: Self-Tape Clothing To Have On Hand

Actor’s Closet: Self-Tape Clothing To Have On Hand

Posted on Feb 7th

It can be incredibly handy to have certain clothing items for self-tapes. Keeping a small portion of your closet devoted to clothes for auditioning that are kept clean and pressed can save time and panic later. Here are just a few to consider..Basic Commercial:Before getting into character types, it’s important to have a few basics. For commercial auditions, this will typically be something in a solid color, and on the more cheerful side. Think of the “family friendly” version of you. Basic Theatrical: Same idea as commercial, but a more serious look. This might mean darker or more muted colors, possibly longer sleeves, something that makes you feel grounded. - Mom/Dad: Having a parental look will go a long way for commercial auditions and day players. A solid cardigan or polo shirt you can throw on to look approachable and relatable can easily suggest the role. Maybe have a pair of glasses handy. You want a slightly more conservative look for this one. - Flirty/Seductive: If it’s in your wheelhouse, having a flirty ingenue or vampy look might be something to consider. It’s a fine line to walk, as you still want to look professional. Hair and makeup can also go a long way here. - Dystopian/Gritty: Get yourself that grungy gray tank top or noticeably worn tee. Having an appropriately lived-in looking jacket (army green, brown, or other darker earth tones) might also be a good idea. - Professional White Collar, putting together a look with a blazer or suit with a tie can suggest a lawyer, CEO, detective, accountant or any type of white-collar professional. - Professional Blue Collar, on the other side of the spectrum, a nice denim shirt that you can roll up the sleeves can easily transform you into a farmer, hometown clerk, etc. - Scrubs, bring on the medical dramas! If you don’t have actual scrubs (though they can often be found in uniform stores) a solid color v-neck shirt can suggest a nurse or technician. A lab coat might be good to have on hand if you can find one. #actor #audition #selftape #wardrobe

Oops! I Signed the Wrong Contract?

Posted on Feb 3rd

Three weeks ago, a major TV network placed me under contract; however, I suspect whoever is in charge of writing the contracts issued me an incorrect pay value on the contract. Moreover, they haven't paid me. I filed a claim with SAG-AFTRA, and the claim bounced around their offices this past week. I'm not sure my union knows how to resolve this unique issue. So, how will this get resolved? Will the network make good on the contract, breach the contract, or offer a compromise? I'm a reasonable person and willing to work with the network in resolving this peculiar issue.

Actors Should Always Be Practicing

Actors Should Always Be Practicing

Posted on Jan 26th

Record yourself reading monologues and short scenes. You can purchase a book of monologues online or through Industry sites giving you hours of potential roles to inhabit.Pick one and practice it 2-3 times, then tape yourself giving the speech. When you rewatch it, take notes on where you want to improve, what lines sounded great, and ideas you have to make it better. Then re-do the speech, recording again until you're happy with the results.Choose a variety of monologues, not just the ones you're most comfortable with. This is practice time, so challenge yourself. It may be worth experimenting, rather than going for a set expectation of perfection. Sometimes a different approach can really make a monologue stand out. What happens if you:- Slow your lines down- Stress different words- Put longer pauses in- Change your tone- Switch it up, you may surprise yourself!Try different accents, and consider learning a new language while you’re at it. New skills to add to your resume is always a good thing.#audition #actor #casting #monologue #sides #selftape #script #workshop #video #manager #agent #hollywood #success

It's Not Your Fault

It's Not Your Fault

Posted on Jan 25th

If you're not booking auditions (in the U.S.A.), it's not your fault. Stop blaming yourself. You haven't upset your agent, if you have one, and casting directors aren't out to get you for some misstep you think you took. Another strike looms in Hollywood.  This time it involves members of two unions: The Teamsters and IATSE. The issues are quite complex. Their contracts end January 31, and that's why many productions didn't ramp up after the actors and writers strike ended. Hold on folks. Everyone needs to fasten your seatbelts, low and tight around your waist. Choppy air ahead. We'll resume the beverage service shortly. NEW ARTICLE: https://variety.com/2023/biz/news/iatse-teamsters-hollywood-labor-peace-next-year-1235823080/

Throughout the shoot, Steven delivered a different interpretation of his scripted character with a myriad of creative choices. It was a spectacle to witness an actor of his caliber seamlessly execute such diverse performances. I'm still in awe of his talent and wondering how he acquired such remarkable skills.

A few thoughts on voice acting

A few thoughts on voice acting

Posted on Jan 22nd

I got into voice acting over ten years ago and thought it was all about commercials. It turns out it's not; in fact, narrative stuff like explainer videos, audiobooks, and e-learning are a much larger part of the voice-acting universe. I find narration lots more exciting than short commercial scripts and easier to learn. I had quite a bit of acting experience, but it takes specialized training for voice-over if you want to do lots of it from your home. You need a home studio, a good mic, a computer, and special software to record. You need to learn the basics of audio engineering. I'm also a singer. I love voice acting because it combines my love of singing and acting in one space.

Actors, Thinking About A Name Change?

Actors, Thinking About A Name Change?

Posted on Jan 22nd

Now, in a way, the reverse is true. Networks and platforms are looking for authenticity, as well as for the opportunity to tell stories from voices and perspectives not often heard. A name that suggests cultural specificity can actually be helpful, given the scrutiny regarding parts being played by actors of appropriate ethnicity.”– President of a TV Production Company“I once hired a guy whose name I not only couldn’t remember — but couldn’t pronounce. I avoided him at all costs and vowed never to hire him again.”– Reality Show Producer“I have never asked a client to create a ‘brand new’ name. I have, however, suggested some folks reconsider their given names, as whatever they were currently using sounded generic, or even had a certain falsity to it. Clearly Cary Grant, Marilyn Monroe, and Lady Gaga have done all right, but my feeling is if people are comfortable with what their parents named them, then so am I.”– A Talent Agent“I love the fact that we live in a day and age where an actor does NOT have to change his/her/their name, because that’s what the industry mandates. I think it’s important for actors to be true to themselves and authentic with who they are. That being said, I have many clients who do have ‘stage names’ and I love that too. And there can be many reasons for that — privacy, for one. My only suggestion is that if you are going to change your name, you do a thorough Google search on that new name BEFORE you change it.”– Liza Anderson, Owner Anderson Group Public Relations“I fully support changing the name if it suits and supports the creative process. Being an actor is a creative endeavor. Performance, delivery, and marketing are all part of the artistic process. If you have a challenging name and you have something you want to use that is easy to remember or visually appealing, then there’s nothing wrong with creating something new. When marketing a film, all components matter.”– Jen Ditchik, Vice President, Strategy & Innovation at WC+A#actor

Is it better to be a "niche" writer or a versatile writer?

Is it better to be a "niche" writer or a versatile writer?

I have 7 completed scripts (2 pilots, 5 features) and I've been pitching for about two and a half years. I get a lot of "strong project but currently not the right fit" from many producers on another pitch service and I've never received a "request" from my stage32 pitch sessions. Last summer I worked on some re-writes with a producer from MarVista on my young adult horror slasher however no option was signed and I'm kinda just sitting in stasis with him while we wait to see if this one network may pick it up. My comfort zone is horror and romcoms but my current roster of projects consists of a sitcom, a sci-fi series, a Christmas rom com, a standard rom com, a sci-fi thriller, a horror slasher, and a supernatural thriller. I always write whatever ideas grab my attention but should I stick to what I feel I write best or continue to show my range?

How to find Local Actors Or Voice Actors In Your Area

How to find Local Actors Or Voice Actors In Your Area

Posted on Jan 18th

Hello guys good afternoon, i know i have shared my shows Thomas And The Coles but the question is how to find them in your local area, i know that both voice acting and screenwriting is a very competitive field, and takes a lot of practice, i  think its not easy finding the right people, so if i were to find people in montgomery county prince george's that would be easy. since i'm good with music i would do most of the music in my tv show.  so my question to you is how can i find professionals in my area? this is a job i want and i have the skills to write a good story line.

Bad Acting Habits To Avoid

Bad Acting Habits To Avoid

- Using lines as an excuse - “When I know the lines I’ll be able to perform the scene better” - this is an excuse to cover up many things, mainly inhibitions, the fear of trying something or not knowing what to do because you haven’t read the scene/script enough. As Lee Strasberg (The Method guru) once said, learning lines is about memory and acting has nothing to do with memory. My advice is to play and experiment with the scene. You can only do this by reading it and making justified choices. Find a suitable way of training your memory to learn lines effectively because that’s not the job of your acting coach. - Not reading the script enough - AKA lazy acting. Some actors go through the script, but only to learn their lines. You need to know the FULL story, not just the story of the scene your character appears in or only the story of your character. To get the full picture you must read the FULL script (more than once). Here are some things to think about when reading the FULL script: Why does your character choose those specific words? What do they really mean? What is really going on? What has lead them to where they are now? In the early stages of character development you’re like a detective; you have to piece the full picture together to be able to connect to the character, then you have to figure out what the motive behind the character’s behavior is so you can make clear choices in each scene you appear in.- Forcing emotions/trying too hard - this is usually done to impress, and there is logic in that, but acting should feel effortless. When you try too hard or try to force something, it looks fake, feels strange and just doesn’t make the thing you’re trying to make happen appear. The same happens with emotions. Find inner purpose for what your character is going through and demonstrating through gestures and expressions.#actor #tv #film #video #script #writer #drama #manager #agent #casting #director #success #hollywood

Can Self Tapes be fun and book jobs?

Can Self Tapes be fun and book jobs?

Can you imagine getting a self tape request that you’re excited to shoot? What if your self tape was fun and you really felt like if you didn't book the job, you know you booked the casting office?     Not convinced? I hear you - basically you've shot a lot of self tapes and you thought you knew what casting wanted but still… you didn’t book the job. I get it. My students were just like you. Honest. Read for yourself how Intentional Acting students have benefitted from the course:I got cast as the lead in a play which I auditioned for last fall - but didn't get a callback. They had to recast the role and held a second audition. The second audition I did the 9 Questions of Intentional Acting and I walked in as a different person because I had done the work versus the first time I was so nervous and worried only about the words on the page. Apparently my improvement showed. I got cast as the female lead.  ~ Victoria Paganini KADE, Z-LISTERS, LIGHT MY FIRETaking your class is a great investment for any actor. It exceeded my expectations. It really, really, really helped me understand how to breakdown the script. After taking your class I have a newfound respect for acting because I had no idea how much it took to really understand the character, the show, and being in the moment.  I applied the Intentional Acting tools to a project I worked on last weekend. The director commented on how great my performance was and asked me to be in his next project! ~ Shevonne Monique CHERRY BOMB, HIT LISTThese aren't just examples of lucky breaks. These are hard-working actors who needed more specific acting tools.   Set up a 20 minute Free Actor's Strategy call and see if this class is a match for you.  Here's the link:  www.DiscoverIntentionalActing.com

The Whale

The Whale

Posted on Jan 17th

My week started off with watching ‘Society of the Snow’ and last night I finally got to watch A24’s ‘The Whale’, directed by Darren Aronofsky, written by Samuel D Hunter (and based on his play). Starring Brendan Foster and Sadie Sink. There is something about films being made that are based on plays; Dial M for Murder comes to mind. The sets for the films are simple, stage-like affairs. I think I’d call this style ‘Intimisme’, because with The Whale you have a cast of seven actors who move around a beautifully crafted set, which becomes the centre of expressing the pain of their soul. But where’s the action? We are always told that it’s all about the action, aren’t we, but in Aronofsky’s ‘The Whale’ we have the intimacy of pain, of Charlie (Brendan Fraser) and Ellie (Sadie Sink), in fact every character save for the Young Ellie, brings their pain to Charlie’s apartment. And, you are carried along by the dialogue, carried on waves of emotion, waves of pain and you get astonishing performances from every actor on this set. I don’t know why I was so surprised, astonished even, at Brendan Fraser’s performance; it goes beyond the heavy prosthetic he had to wear. Beyond ‘George of the Jungle’ and ‘The Mummy’ and it turns out that he is a great actor, which perhaps shows that any level of performance is all down to the material. As Charlie says towards the end of the film, ‘People are amazing’. He’s talking about you and me, about us and our resilience, our tenacity for life. That we keep on going, no matter what is thrown at us. Note to self: It turns out that Life can throw us more than one curve ball, simultaneously!I’ve included in this post, the link to the final scene, with its over-swell of emotion. This is a stunning performance from the small intimate cast of life’s heroes. I recommend that if you haven’t watched this film yet, that you will make it a priority to do so. If you have watched it, then please leave your thoughts on this little masterpiece below. https://youtu.be/LvwOSmIba_k?si=aTOXLVhz05ysEdVc

Navigating a Hypothetical Dilemma

Navigating a Hypothetical Dilemma

Posted on Jan 16th

As an actor exploring potential representation, let's delve into a hypothetical scenario. Imagine discovering a boutique agency run by a dedicated owner and her single assistant. Now, consider learning that the owner's adult son is facing serious, life-altering mental health issues. In this situation, there's a potential challenge. On one hand, the agent might need extended time off to support her son, which could impact your job opportunities. On the other hand, there's an opportunity to contribute to the destigmatization of mental illness through supporting the agent by allowing her to represent you. How would you approach this hypothetical dilemma? What factors would you weigh in balancing your career aspirations and the call to raise awareness about mental health? I'm curious to hear your thoughts on this hypothetical scenario. Your insights matter, so let's open up a constructive conversation.
